Medim: Oil on canvas
Year: 2017
About the artwork:
Alpha 1A is a striking exploration of identity, presence, and the idea of an original or fundamental state. Andrew combines realism with a surreal edge, creating an image that feels both recognisable and deliberately ambiguous.
The title suggests beginnings, hierarchy, and the concept of an “alpha”—but the work leaves the meaning open, allowing the viewer to bring their own interpretation. Andrew’s detailed oil technique and considered use of form create a strong visual presence, while the enigmatic subject encourages a closer look.
Painted in oils using Andrew’s distinctive limited-palette approach, the work balances rich tonal depth with expressive detail, giving the piece a raw, tactile presence. Alpha 1A is a one-of-one original artwork.
