Important Update on Presence Required Exhibition
Hiya,
The lead-up to next week’s exhibition has been hectic—as expected—but also unexpectedly difficult. A series of events outside of my control caused setbacks and time losses that couldn’t be recovered. On top of that, both of my parents were hospitalised several times, which meant too many ambulance rides for my liking and long stretches of urgent, high-stress focus away from the studio.
Because of this, I haven’t had the time to complete and present Presence Required to the level I committed to. After a lot of reflection, I’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the exhibition in its intended form.
Instead, we’re pivoting towards something new: an evolving event that invites people to visit multiple times over the month. It will include workshops, live art-making, and the chance to explore the process of creating work—the part of art that’s often overlooked. This shift feels more true to the reasons I wanted to put on this show in the first place, and it reflects how we adapt when life throws curveballs and demands change.
Presence Required will still have its moment—fully realised, complete, and with the time and space it deserves—at a later date. For now, stepping back allows us to move forward in a way that is positive, interactive, inclusive, and hopefully gives back to the community I’m grateful to be part of.
I look forward to sharing this evolving experience with you.
Cheers,
Andy
PRESENCE REQUIRED
Presence Required is an interactive art experience exploring the value of attention in a distracted world.
We live in an era where algorithms compete for our focus in tiny, constant bites. Our time is no longer ours. We skim past breathtaking works in seconds, adapt creativity to fit a feed, and call three seconds of viewing a success.
This exhibition pushes back.
Each painting is hidden within a sculptural frame that slowly reveals the work after a set time spent in its presence. The durations — 30 seconds, 2 minutes, and 10 minutes — are intentionally uncomfortable for the pace we’ve learned to live by. There is no soundtrack, no phone, no post — only the art, the viewer, and the experience they create together.
Presence Required is also a reflection of the artist’s experience with ADHD, acknowledging that focus and stillness affect us differently. It invites every visitor to confront how they give their time and what that act truly means.
Here, art doesn’t ask for your likes.
It asks for you.
“In an age of constant scrolling and shrinking focus, this exhibition asks you to slow down.”
no phones. no posts. no previews.
Just you, the art, and the time you’re willing to give it. Because what we give our attention to shapes who we are.
“An interactive art experience exploring the value of attention in a distracted world.”
